Game witness

Postby Malasida В» 18.12.2019

.

I spent a long time wondering why The Witness took place on an island. The Witness , developed by a team led by well-known indie game designer Jonathan Blow, is a puzzle game. Nearly every free surface has a panel stuck on it, and each panel is a line puzzle, a complete-the-circuit task that almost invariably paves the way for another puzzle. The setting, then, seems incidental. The abandoned island is lovely, full of pockets of surprising color and vibrancy.

It didn't make sense to me. Why design an intricate, striking setting only to force players to spend dozens of hours looking at tiny screens-within-screens? The answer came late in the game, when the mountain at the center of the island opened up. It was hollow, and full of machinery going all the way down to the ocean surface.

Inside, there were—you guessed it—more puzzles. But that's when everything finally made sense. The Witness didn't see the island the same way I did. It was never a neutral place, just a setting for the game. It was huge puzzle, in which all the others nestled. The game has a way of rebuffing visitors, hiding its most important truths. It seemed indifferent, even hostile. But it was also inscrutable, and you can't be sure something hates you until you know its motives. Now, after reaching what passes for an ending, it's somewhat clearer.

The Witness is a sterile, lifeless videogame. It revels in the idea of knowledge, fascinated by how it's earned and what it signifies. But it seems uninterested in players and their accomplishments, and with that lack of interest comes a lack of the human touch necessary to make sense of the knowledge it offers. The Witness is like the island on which it takes place: a machine, to the core.

Anything within it that seems lifelike is superficial. Puzzles block every single step you take in The Witness. Every moment of triumph is undercut by another glowing panel, and the difficulty ramps up and transforms in creative and maddening ways. Some of the puzzle conceits are ingenious, but often the twists feel unearned or even hostile.

Some puzzles require very precise environmental movements, asking the player to shift their location in ways that leave the game engine struggling.

It forces you to fiddle with a joystick or a keyboard for minutes on end, moving back and forth little by little, working via trial and error to find the proper perspective. The Witness doesn't ask for the player's presence, and it doesn't do anything beyond the bare minimum to accommodate it, either. All games are dependent upon players to exist, but rarely have I encountered one so indifferent to my performance.

My favorite moments, the only ones I truly enjoyed, were the brief respites as I traveled from puzzle to puzzle. Riding on a boat, I saw the reflection of the mountain grow in the water. These beautiful byproducts are the best The Witness has to offer, and inevitably turn into a puzzle or a clue or are left by the wayside. And what to do once the doors are unlocked? There's no answer to this question, and indeed Blow's magnum opus seems to hardly bother noticing you might even ask it.

The Witness challenges the very nature of reward structure in games. Its best answer is the suggestion that you could do it all again if you wanted. The satisfaction of knowing, it suggests, is an end unto itself. Maybe so. But The Witness offers no context within which to place its knowledge. The story, to the extent that it has one, is similarly hard to get a handle on.

There are hidden videos and audio logs, each discussing some philosophical framework of the world in quotes and excerpts. A scientist here, a poet there, the Buddha up ahead. It wants us to ask how we ought to situate our knowledge. What types of knowledge should we be looking for? Why are they important?

It offers a bulletin board of ideas, read in placid, monotone voices, a Pinterest approach to a theory of knowledge. The problem with this approach is the same problem as the island itself: it's not very lifelike. It erases the people and situations in which these ideas arose, fails to situate them in any context in which they can make sense.

At one point in The Witness , the player unlocks a movie theater. By entering special codes, the player can watch video clips, embedded messages from the real world buried in the mysterious, lush island on which the game is set. The first you can find is a television clip featuring British intellectual and science historian James Burke, from a real-life broadcast called Yesterday, Tomorrow and You. Scientific knowledge is the only true way to understand the world, Burke says: "[Art] is easier to take, isn't it?

Got people in it. Scientific knowledge is hard to take, because it removes the reassuring crutches of opinion, ideology, and leaves only what is demonstrably true about the world. But knowledge requires interpretation. Even the notion of objectivity is a framework, devised and shaped by human thought and endeavor.

Burke shows the viewer a picture of amino acids under a microscope, gesturing toward such sights as the true source of information. But alone, that image is lacking. Ideology is not a reassuring crutch; it's a necessity. For only an ideology centering the importance of science, that human understanding can lead to progress and growth, gives Burke's amino-acids imagery its import.

Burke suggests that information shapes people. But that relationship works both ways. In an interview with The Guardian , Jonathan Blow said that he wants to make games "for the people who read Gravity's Rainbow. In the context of the piece, he's talking about the challenge of the Thomas Pynchon novel, the way it's notoriously heady and capricious. Like so much to do with The Witness , however, it's a reductive view: People don't read novels like Gravity's Rainbow because they're hard. What's engrossing about writers like Pynchon isn't that they're difficult; it's that they're unabashedly human in their creations.

Gravity's Rainbow is messy and gonzo, but it's so enamored with the world and the people in it that in order to talk about its interests it has to talk about everything else first. It's hard, but it's alive.

The Witness takes place on a clockwork machine pretending to be a nature preserve. The only people here are statues, disembodied voices, and lecturers from old videotapes.

It's hard, but it's empty. That's not the same thing. Thekla, Inc. View Comments. Sponsored Stories Powered By Outbrain. Your Covid Questions, Answered.
